Our house has recently (early 2026) gotten into [NEC PC-FX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC-FX). As part of this interest, we've obtained a memory card for the system, an [FX-BMP](https://www.pcengine-fx.com/PC-FX/html/pc-fx_world_-_sm_-_pc-fx_bmp.html) *(Backup Memory Pack)*. The plan is to throw together a non-volatile replacement for the FX-BMP. To that end, we picked up a cheap one with some corrosion. No problem, we only plan to reuse the housing. But oh man. Oh jeez. Wow. I mean *wow*. Under magnification it almost looks like an alien landscape. In case you aren't familiar, the FX-BMP uses battery-backed SRAM to store save game files. The pack as a whole uses two AAA batteries as the primary power source, but also contains a supercapacitor to retain data during battery swaps. When we removed the PCB from the housing, the wires leading to the AAA batteries simply *fell off*.
